Getting The Family Involved

Ben Stoltzfus of Loganton, PA, has been providing Alderfer customers with organic brown eggs that you can trust for close to 15 years. One of the main reasons that he wanted to get into the farming business, specifically raising chickens, is that he can get his entire family involved in the process.

Ben began working on his own farm in 1991, but it wasn’t until the spring of 2000 that he started raising chickens. Growing up, his dad had a chicken farm and because of that, he thought he would never do that on his own. However in 2003, Ben started a partnership with Alderfer Poultry Farm to provide eggs for them. He liked working with the Alderfer Family because of their importance on small family businesses. Ben was also the first one of Alderfer’s contract farms in the Loganton area.

One thing that Ben enjoys most about farming is being able to spend more time with his family. He loves the ability to be at home with them, but to also work with them around the farm and collecting the eggs. This is what enticed him to begin this line of work, especially starting with the chickens.

On the Stoltzfus farm, they also enjoy raising produce (corn and tomatoes) for the auction and sheep for meat. They also started a flower greenhouse in order to grow flowers to sell as well.
